A week in Estonia: from medieval magic to Beach Grind
Okay, so you're coming to Estonia for Beach Grind? Cool, we can’t wait to see you there! But if you’re planning to just fly in for the festival and head straight back out, you’re missing out on one of Northern Europe’s best-kept spots.
Estonia may be small – it’s 1.5x smaller than Lithuania, 7x smaller than Finland and around 200x smaller than the USA –, but it’s wild, effortlessly magical, and ridiculously easy to get around.
So, we’ve mapped out a 7-day “Festival & Beyond” run that takes you from Tallinn to the energetic frequencies of the summer capital, Pärnu, then down into the lush, romantic vibes of South Estonia.
First things first
Estonia is where cutting-edge digital life meets deep, untouched nature – think ancient forests by day and a buzzing nightlife after dark.
That contrast is exactly why we built this guide around Beach Grind: so you can experience more than just the festival and make the most of your time exploring the country like you know your way around.
Speaking about knowing your way around – renting a car gives you the most freedom while staying, with convenient app-based options like Bolt Drive or CityBee. But it’s just as easy to tap into the local way of getting from A to B: the bus network is reliable, well-connected, and covers most of the country.
Use:
peatus.ee to plan your routes from county to county;
tpilet.ee for longer bus journeys from town to town;
elron.ee if you’re travelling by train.
Now, let’s dive into the full hypothetical itinerary we’ve put together – seven days, Tuesday to Tuesday – starting from Tallinn Airport and wrapping up right back at the start.
Tuesday (day 1): touchdown in Tallinn
Welcome to one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. In the afternoon, wander through the cobblestone streets of the Tallinn Old Town and stop by a local pastry shop for something sweet. No worries, you’ll find one for sure.
Then make your way to Telliskivi Creative City, where locals gather among industrial buildings transformed into trendy bars, boutiques, and street art. Grab a craft beer, find a spot on a terrace, and take in the summer air (by the way, Estonia has some of the cleanest air in the World) as locals and expats come together for laid-back after-work hangouts.
Wednesday (day 2): underwater prisons & coastal views
Before heading south, take some time to explore beyond Tallinn. One of the most unique spots is Rummu Quarry, a former limestone area and Soviet-era prison that’s now flooded with crystal-clear turquoise water. You can get there by bus.It’s an easy day trip there and back, and the bus ride gives you a glimpse of Estonia’s changing landscapes along the way. In the evening, return to Tallinn for one more night and head to the seaside Noblessner district for dinner by the water.In Tallinn, we recommend exploring on foot – this way you can see the charming old wooden houses sitting side by side with glass towers, all within walking distance. You can always brainstorm more ideas on what to do with the help of a virtual Visit Estonia tour guide.
Thursday (day 3): the road to the summer capital, Pärnu
Time to head to Pärnu, but on the way, make sure to stop at Mukri Bog, where wooden boardwalks lead you across peaceful marshland. Bogs, marshes, and swamps are what we like to call our most precious natural treasure – and once you arrive, you’ll understand why.
Once you arrive in Pärnu, check into your accommodation and ease into the city’s rhythm. July 9th marks pre-party day, and the energy starts building early.
You’ll have plenty of time to try activities locals love or explore a curated list of five spots recommended by Cartoon’s member Joosep in “Dine Like a DJ.” For further information about the Pärnu country, you can also head over to the dedicated Visit Pärnu page.
Friday and Saturday (days 4-5): enjoy the festival magic
This is it. You made it! Two days of the best electronic music, dance music and live performances, right next to the beach. It’s all about summer, sea, and world-class production coming together.
Between sets, take a dip in the Baltic Sea – it’s right there. Just keep it smart: don’t drink and swim or drive, look out for your friends, and always stay responsible. Make sure to also be in the know with the latest festival info!
Sunday (day 6): the ultimate recovery
After two to three days of dancing, your body will thank you for slowing things down – and in Estonia, taking it easy comes naturally.
Ease into a proper reset by visiting a spa. And luckily, Pärnu is known for its spa culture, with spots like Hedon Spa & Hotel or Tervise Paradiis Spa Hotel. Here, sauna isn’t just a hot room. It’s a way to bring yourself back to the moment. And sweat out the festival fatigue.If saunas aren’t quite your thing, drift into full relaxation mode on Pärnu Beach, where shallow waters and soft white sand make it easy to spend hours doing absolutely nothing. Grab a snack from one of the beach lounges and enjoy the soft breeze.
Monday (day 7): the real small-town idyll
Don’t head back to Tallinn just yet – go inland and experience the “real” Estonia. For example, make your first stop in Viljandi. A hilly, green town known for its castle ruins and effortlessly Instagrammable views. Then continue to Tartu, the country’s university city and intellectual heart. Walk through Raekoja plats and along the banks of the river Emajõgi – in English, you could call it the “mother river”. The vibe there is youthful, creative, and just a little bit sophisticated.
Back to real life
It’s a smooth 2-hour drive or bus ride from Tartu straight to Tallinn Airport. For final souvenirs, grab some Kalev chocolate or traditional black bread.
Estonia is more than just a backdrop for a festival – it’s a whole mood. It’d be a pleasure to host you, and we can’t wait to welcome you.
See you at Beach Grind!
